If you have been thinking of trying to find your golf clubs in your cluttered garage, and heading out to the driving range, here is an idea to make this golf season more enjoyable. Increase your distance off the tee by improving your flexibility. Flexibility is the key to increased distance, as well as, accuracy. Ultimately, you want to create a wider more flowing arc with your golf swing. This can only be accomplished by a full turn with your shoulders and the core of your body.
Most golfers think that to increase distance they need to lift weights and get stronger. Strength in the back, shoulders, and arms is important, but not as important as gaining flexibility. If you don’t believe me watch Michelle Wie make a full swing. Ms. Wie is extremely fit and athletic, but I don’t think that she will be winning any weight lifting or arm wrestling championships in the near future. Still, she is able to consistently hit drives over 275 yards. Her tremendous club head speed and distance are derived from a wide swing arc and complete follow through with her legs, torso, and upper body. This creates the club head speed needed to hit long drives.
Michelle Wie demonstrates Flexibility
I should also mention here that added flexibility will help you hit the ball straighter. Increased flexibility will allow you to stay on line past the point of impact longer which will keep your club head following down the correct swing path and produce more accurate shots. It doesn’t matter if you hit it 300+ yards if you can’t find it.
Age has a way of making your overall muscles become less flexible limiting that Freddie Couples like golf swing that you had as a nubile 20-something. That’s why we have to take more time to loosen up and stretch before our round, especially as we get older. The long cold winter months spent lounging in front of your 42-inch wide screen watching football, munching on nachos and doing 12 ounce curls with your favorite cold beverage, only tends to accelerate the fossilization process and make it more difficult to recreate that perfect golf swing.
Watch this short video and practice these easy stretching exercises to increase your flexibility and avoid injury when you hit the first tee.

Even if you are a little older and your six pack abs more closely resembles a pony keg, these are easy exercises that can help increase your core flexibility and create a wider more complete swing.
Stretch out those old bones, get flexible and remember, “Chicks Dig The Long Ball”. I’ll catch you on the “Back 9”.
